How do I make a powerful laser cutter?
Buy a kit. They start cheap for small areas but aren’t that much more for larger beds. These all move the LED laser head and top out at about 15 W. These are ¡°open frame” designs with no light baffles to capture stray reflections, but the beem path is straight down and an inch long so unless you try to lose metal, normal laser safety glasses are sufficient.
The next step up is the 40W CO2 ¡°tube” lasers, these can cut up to about 1/4¡±¨C1/2¡å in common materials (not metals!). They need cooling and forced air venting, neither comes with the laser itself. The 40W CO2’s tend to be enclosed desktop units. The difference is that the laser tube is stationary and only beam steering mirrors move.
Bigger is more power. There are 10,000W CO2 steel cutters and bigger yet.
The CNC is really independent of the size of the bed or the laser power. It’s pretty well click and go.
