Glass is another edge case as it reflects back so much of the laser light it can fail to cut and of course presents a hazard.
Metals can also reflect but, basically, most of the lasers you will get access to as a hobby person don¡¯t have the power to chew through metal. Metal isn¡¯t a good match for that technology anyhow; water jet will plow through thicker material with a cleaner cut.
And then there was the ¡°yes, but¡± materials. People had tried bread, chocolate, fabric¡a number of odd materials that weren¡¯t exactly illegal to put in the machine, but generally made a mess and the results weren¡¯t thrilling either. With a lot of finesse you can engrave chocolate for a nice visual effect (I have no idea what it does to the taste) and paper and fabric both cut nicely but tend to burst into flames if you aren¡¯t very precise with your settings.
Or so is my memory. Several people were cutting leather pieces to be laced together and it seemed like that worked quite well.
