Should I use distilled or tap water for cooling a 40W CNC laser cutter?
You want to use distilled water as it won¡¯t have minerals that can deposit on the internal components. However, if there are any metal components in the system, mild electrical presence can cause a transfer of metal ions from one metal to another, thus damaging system components. Any exposure to light can cause algae to grow. There are also surfactants that allow the water to coat the components without risk of bubbles forming. Basically bubbles, algae, or mineral build-up can reduce the cooling ability and lead to component failure.
